Finding a Virginia Preceptor for Purdue Global

AANP classifies Virginia as a restricted practice state. Nurse practitioners with fewer than three years or 5,400 clinical practice hours generally work through an agreement with a patient care team physician. Eligible experienced NPs may apply for autonomous practice status and work without that agreement.

Two clinicians in similar settings may therefore use different regulatory structures. Either may be a potential preceptor if the active credentials, specialty, patient population, schedule, and site fit the course. Ask about the current structure and who at the organization approves students.

Students remain supervised through the approved practicum. Autonomous status does not give the learner independent authority, and a physician agreement does not automatically make the provider unsuitable.

The Virginia Board of Nursing publishes APRN information within the Department of Health Professions. Virginia jointly regulates APRNs through the Boards of Nursing and Medicine. Verify the active credential, population focus, public status, and any autonomous practice designation through official resources.

Confirm current Purdue Global eligibility for Virginia clinical activity. A site in the District of Columbia, Maryland, West Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, or North Carolina is a separate location for approval and affiliation work.

Northern Virginia travel deserves its own screen. A clinic that looks nearby may be impractical during morning or evening traffic, while a practice farther from the Beltway may offer a more predictable schedule. Compare repeat commute time, parking, shift start, patient volume, and the preceptor's weekly pattern before accepting dates. In other regions, apply the same test to mountain roads, bridge traffic, and long rural drives.

Purdue Global expects students to lead advocacy for identifying a site and preceptor, supported by the university and a Clinical Student Manager. Once a Virginia clinician matches the course, gather the current CV, site contacts, proposed schedule, and requested preceptor information. Purdue Global makes final approval decisions.

The clinical affiliation agreement is central. Existing-site agreements commonly take about 2 to 4 weeks to confirm and process. New agreements may take 1 to 2 months or longer. These are typical planning ranges, and a large system's legal calendar can extend them.

Virginia organizations may also require health records, background documentation, privacy modules, credentialing, or centralized student applications. Run those tasks alongside agreement work. Clinical activity begins only after the school and site processes are complete.

Purdue Global's MSN NP tracks are FNP, AGPCNP, PMHNP, and AGACNP. FNP, AGPCNP, and PMHNP commonly publish 640 clinical hours, while AGACNP commonly publishes 520. Confirm exact requirements, quarter-credit sequencing, current handbook, and enrollment term.

Community practices can support FNP and AGPCNP. PMHNP students need genuine psychiatric scope and reliable patient access. AGACNP students often need larger acute care organizations with longer onboarding. Plan each course around its required population and setting.
