Mentor, not preceptor
Both non-NP concentrations complete a clinical experience designed to let you apply theoretical knowledge while working with a mentor. Purdue Global's own word here is mentor rather than preceptor, and the distinction is real: what is being assessed is your capability as a leader or an educator, not your patient-care practice.
Practically, that means an outstanding bedside clinician is often the wrong supervisor. The person you need is doing the work the concentration assesses, whether that is running a department or developing other nurses.
Two concentrations, two different searches
Executive leader
A mentor with genuine management responsibility: a unit or department manager, a director of nursing, or a quality or operations lead. Authority over how the work runs, not only over the work.
Nurse educator
A mentor whose role is education: clinical education, staff development, simulation, or faculty in a nursing programme. Teaching and assessment have to be their actual job.
Confirm before you commit
Whether your intended mentor's role satisfies the concentration's criteria, and whether the setting will be approved. Leadership and education titles vary enormously between organisations, so a job title alone does not settle it.
Where these placements sit
For the executive leader concentration, nursing administration offices, quality and operations teams, and long-term care organisations all work, and the last of those is often more willing to host than a large hospital. For nurse educator, hospital staff development and clinical education departments are the most reliable, with simulation centres and nursing programmes next.
The constraint differs between them. Leadership placements are limited by a manager's available time rather than by the number of qualifying people. Education placements are limited by how few clinical educators any one organisation employs, which can be a handful across hundreds of nurses.
The workplace route
Most students on these concentrations are working nurses, and completing the experience inside your own organisation is usually the strongest option: you know the setting, the access exists, and the relationships are already there. The conditions are the familiar ones. The mentor should be someone other than your direct manager, their role has to match the concentration, and the organisation has to agree formally rather than informally.

Confirm with the School of Nursing. We do not publish hour counts the university has not published itself.
How early should I start?
Months ahead for leadership, because bandwidth is the limit; earlier still for education, because the qualifying pool is small.
