RN to BSN

Purdue Global RN-to-BSN Practicum: Preceptor and Site

The Purdue Global RN-to-BSN includes direct care practicum experiences, completed while working with a designated, qualified preceptor, to apply theory and prepare you for baccalaureate-level practice. That word designated is the part students underestimate: the preceptor has to be named, approved and appropriate, not simply available.

What direct care practicum means here

Purdue Global's RN-to-BSN carries direct care practicum experiences designed to let you apply theoretical knowledge and prepare for baccalaureate-level practice, completed while working with a designated, qualified preceptor.

Two words in that sentence do the work. Direct care means the experience has to involve real patient-facing practice rather than an observational or purely administrative project. Designated means the preceptor is a named, approved individual, not whoever happens to be on shift. Between them they rule out a surprising number of arrangements students assume will be fine.

Being an experienced RN is not the same as qualifying

You already work in nursing, so it is tempting to treat the practicum as a formality inside your current role. It is not. The preceptor has to meet the programme's criteria and be designated for you specifically, and the setting has to suit direct care learning at baccalaureate level. Confirm both with your programme before you build a plan around a colleague.

Where RN-to-BSN practicum placements come from

Your own organisation

Usually the fastest route, and often the strongest, provided the designated preceptor is not your direct manager and the unit fits the direct care requirement.

Community and ambulatory care

Clinics, community health and ambulatory settings carry accessible direct care and are frequently more open to hosting than inpatient units.

Public and population health

Health departments and community programmes suit the population-focused outcomes many RN-to-BSN courses assess.

Long-term and post-acute care

Consistently under-subscribed relative to hospitals, with genuine direct care and preceptors who have time to teach.

Why working nurses still get stuck

The obstacle is rarely finding a nurse who is willing. It is that the willing nurse turns out to be your line manager, or works in a setting that does not meet the direct care requirement, or cannot be formally designated because the organisation has no agreement in place. Each of those is discovered late, usually after the term has opened, and each costs the same thing: a session.

What we do

Test the internal route first. If your employer works, that is faster than anything external.
Source externally when it does not. A direct care setting and a preceptor who meets the criteria and can be formally designated.
Carry the agreement. Site paperwork and onboarding prepared and tracked.
Replace quickly. If a preceptor withdraws, designation has to happen again, so the search restarts immediately.

Where we stop

We source and secure the preceptor and the site and we prepare the paperwork. Purdue Global sets every academic requirement and approves the placement. We are an independent service and cannot approve a placement or guarantee one.

Good to know

Can my manager be my preceptor?

Generally not your direct manager. Another qualified nurse in the same organisation is usually acceptable, but confirm with your programme.

How many hours is it?

Confirm the current figure with the Purdue Global School of Nursing. We do not publish hour counts the university has not published itself.

Does my current job count?

Your paid shifts are not the practicum. The experience has to be structured, supervised by a designated preceptor and distinct from your employment duties.

When should I start?

Before the term opens. Designation and any site agreement take longer than finding a willing nurse.
